And I think that's probably a better thing to talk about. We're getting into that time of year where people are going to bring in leftover candy and pumpkin bread and all sorts of treats and they're going to be everywhere. Maybe it's always that time of year. But realizing the difference between a food craving and hunger is important.
A food craving is what happens when I walk by In-N-Out - that smell is amazing, especially at lunch when I'm out for a walk. But that food is terrible - I know you Californians love it but it's awful (I'm more of a Whataburger guy, which is convenient for my diet because the closest one is in Peoria, AZ). And I know I don't like it. But I've still fallen in there before. And it's the same sensation when I walk by a pizza place or Auntie Anne's.
What works for me now is taking a deep breath or two and knowing that the craving is going to pass and that I'm probably going to be happier because of it. I once heard someone describe self-control as a superpower we all have. I like that idea.
I know that may not work for everyone so here are some other tips. I think all of these are reasonable except maybe #7. And since changing your eating habits is usually the #1 thing on everybody's new years resolution list, if you start now then you can focus on something different when January rolls around, like sending glowing Happy New Years cards to your doctor.
